Rewriting the Stories We Tell Ourselves: The First Step to Self-Worth
For years, I told myself the same story: "I'm not smart enough to run my own business." It played on repeat in my head like a broken record, especially whenever I saw other women succeeding in ways I dreamed of. I had convinced myself it was just "being realistic," but really, I was protecting myself from the possibility of failure by never truly trying.

Then one day, a mentor asked me a question that changed everything: "Who told you that story first, and why are you still choosing to believe it?"
I realized I was carrying around narratives that weren't even mine—stories inherited from childhood fears, past failures, and other people's limitations. But here's the beautiful truth I discovered: if we're the authors of these stories, we also have the power to rewrite them.
The Stories That Shape Us
We all have an internal narrator constantly writing the script of our lives. "I'm not good with money." "I'm too sensitive." "I always mess things up." "I'm not leadership material." These stories feel so true because we've told them to ourselves thousands of times, collecting evidence to support them while ignoring anything that contradicts them.
But what if I told you that these stories aren't facts—they're just thoughts you've practiced thinking? And like any habit, they can be changed with awareness and intention.
The stories we tell ourselves become the boundaries of our world. They determine what we attempt, what we avoid, and ultimately, what becomes possible for us. When you believe you're "not good enough," you don't apply for the promotion. When you believe you're "too old to start over," you stay stuck in situations that drain your soul.
Your Insight Mindset Shift Framework
Ready to become the conscious author of your own story? Here's how to identify and rewrite the narratives that are keeping you small:
Recognize the Pattern Start paying attention to your internal dialogue, especially when you're about to try something new or challenging. What stories automatically pop up? Write them down without judgment. Common ones include: "I'm not qualified," "People like me don't do things like this," or "I'll probably fail anyway." Awareness is the first step to transformation.
Challenge the Evidence For each limiting story, ask yourself: "Is this actually true, or is this just a belief I've been carrying?" Look for evidence that contradicts your story. If you believe you're "bad with people," remember the times you comforted a friend or made someone laugh. If you think you're "not creative," recall moments when you solved problems in unique ways. Your limiting beliefs are always partial truths at best.
Rewrite with Intention Now comes the fun part—consciously choosing new stories that serve your growth. Instead of "I'm not smart enough," try "I'm learning and growing every day." Instead of "I always mess things up," try "I'm human, and I learn from my experiences." These aren't just positive affirmations—they're more accurate, empowering truths about who you really are.
Practice the New Script This is where the magic happens. Every time you catch your old story playing, gently interrupt it with your new one. It might feel awkward at first—like learning a new language—but with practice, these empowering stories will become as automatic as the limiting ones once were.
Your Unlimited Potential
Here's what I want you to understand with every fiber of your being: you are not stuck with the stories you've been telling yourself. You are not destined to repeat the patterns of your past. You are not limited by what others have said about you or what you've believed about yourself up until this moment.
You have the power to choose thoughts that expand your world instead of shrinking it. You can write yourself as the hero of your own story instead of the victim. You can decide, right now, that your past does not determine your future.
The most successful, fulfilled, joyful people I know aren't the ones who never had limiting beliefs—they're the ones who learned to question those beliefs and consciously choose better stories.
Your new story starts now. What will you choose to believe about yourself today?
